Greenbelt have recently released their first festival line up announcement for Wit and Wisdom, and we’re really excited about who will be there! Members of General Council and the staff team have picked out their must-see speakers and music acts:
“My pick would be the Stansted 15. Laura Clayton, one of the 15, was the president of the Lancaster University Students’ Union when I was an undergraduate there, so Lancaster students past and present were shocked by the terrorism offenses that the group were charged with. I would love to hear some of their side of the story. For some light hearted fun I would recommend Folk On. The are funny, folky and have awesome accents!” Helena Ripley, General Council
“For me its mostly comedy. I love hearing new funny people so I’m excited about who will make me laugh this year. Also Greenbelt always has such a range of speakers and I’ve loved hearing from all sorts from celebs to some of my favourite theologians and now Russell Brand, I’m fascinated by what he has to say on life and faith and politics. Him I need to see!” Rach Collins, Regional Development Worker North West.
“For me it is Nadia Bolz-Weber, I’m currently reading her latest book to review it for Movement magazine so it will be interesting to see what she speaks about in person. Also Harry and Chris, the nation’s favourite Comedy-Rap-Jazz duo, are a Greenbelt must see for me. I really enjoyed the food venue last year where they had people like Jack Monroe hosting a daily food ‘show’, so it’s nice to see it back, and it will be interesting to see who they announce will be there this year.” Emilia de Luca, General Council
“I’ve loved Gregory Alan Isakov for ages. He sings calm, comforting indie-folk music and I’m really excited to finally see him perform live. I’m also looking forward to Hope and Social who are a more up-beat band – they always put a smile on my face. I’ve seen Frank Turner twice in the last year, and his live sets are a great time. I’m excited to hear from Nadia Bolz-Weber again as well, she’s a brutally honest and authentic speaker and I love her. She’s recently done an art project asking women to send her their purity rings to be melted down into a sculpture – I’m intrigued to hear more about that!” Emma Temple, Regional Development Worker North East & Yorkshire
“My top pick for Greenbelt is Brass Against! I am a fan of the genres of Hip Hop, Rock and Brass Band separately, so why not enjoy them all at once! This is exactly what this politically charged ‘Hip-Rock’ with horns is all about. I am also excited to see if I can catch Harry Baker of Harry and Chris fame, and Frank Turner. That said, one of my favorite things about Greenbelt is discovering some new music!” Rob Chivers, SCM Connect Project Worker
SCM will be at Greenbelt again this yes, so do come and see us in the Takeaway and please join us for our student meet up! (More details on that nearer the time.) If you are interested in volunteering with us at greenbelt, or finding out more about this opportunity please email [email protected].
