Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum’s Annual Student Essay Contest. Each year, the scholarship awards $50 – $100, $75 – $150, $150 – $500, and $500 – $1,000, respectively, to the top 3 applicants in 5th & 6th grade, 7th & 8th grade, 9th & 10th grade, and 11th & 12th grade. To apply, interested students must watch a video made by the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, then write an essay in response to the prompt. As the prompt may change each year and varies by grade level, we recommend checking out the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum website before applying. (This years winners have been selected but this is an annual scholarship open to 5th-12th graders)

The David Thelen Award seeks to recognize the most outstanding article on American history written in a language other than English. The winning piece will be published in the Journal, and submissions from January 1st of the year two years prior to the deadline year, to December 31st of the year prior to the deadline year, are eligible. Previously unpublished articles are also eligible. The article should be well-written, carefully argued, and offer a fresh perspective on colonial American and/or U.S. history. The competition is open to various genres of scholarship, including roundtables, keynote addresses, and conference papers. Manuscripts should be written in a language other than English and framed for readers outside the U.S. Don’t forget to label your submission as “[Year] David Thelen Award Entry” and submit an electronic version via email, along with a hard copy mailed to the address listed on the scholarship’s website. Are you a high school senior planning to study English or History at college? If so, consider applying for the Antonia Scholarship! The scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors from U.S. high schools who plan to study English or History at university. The scholarship is funded by the Willa Cather Foundation, a non-profit organization formed in 1955. The foundation helps continue Cather’s legacy and supports the next generation of writers. The Ántonia Scholarship is in honor of Annie Sadilek Pavelka, the inspiration for characters in Cather’s stories “My Ántonia” and “Neighbour Rosicky.” Each year, one eligible applicant wins a $1,000 scholarship to help pay for their degree. If you are on the road to studying a History or English degree and would like some help paying for it, we encourage you to apply!

Are you a high school student in the U.S. with an interest in Middle Eastern Studies, and specifically the history and legacy of Emir Abdelkader? If so, consider applying for the Abdelkader Global Leadership Prize! Each year, the prize awards $500 each to the two high school applicants who submit the best essay OR video addressing “how the Emir’s letter offers a path to help communities today throughout the world to live together in harmony. Identify three significant quotes from Emir Abdelkader that are still relevant today and worthy of repetition.” Emir was a 19th century humanitarian whose legacy offers valuable insights into Islamic culture, interfaith relations, ethical leadership, and diverse perspectives. The National Youth Orchestra of the United States (NYO-USA) is often cited as the top youth orchestra in the country. It’s also known to be one of the most competitive to get into. Last year, the orchestra was conducted by the incomparable Marin Alsop and toured South America with world-famous French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

There are opportunities for high school, college, and graduate school students to work with the National Park Service. Many of these jobs are filled at the park level but others are advertised and recruited nationally by the National Park Service or in partnership with several national organizations.

Varies 

FPRI interns connect with members of the foreign relations community at a prestigious think tank. In addition to working one-on-one with professionals in the field, interns attend weekly foreign policy and career-focused seminars with guest speakers. Types of internships include Research, Special Events/Development, Communications, and Operations. Are you also interested in writing for publication? Interns also have opportunities to work on research papers that can be considered for the publication FPRI Intern’s Corner (check it out for a great lens into the issues that these interns work on).

Varies

Meaningful Teens offers internships and volunteer experiences for high school students across its welfare and educational programs. Projects range from Project Omega (tutoring Oakland grammar school students in reading) to Project Speak Together (offering one-on-one conversational experiences with Ukrainian students). Interns and volunteers contribute to these projects for a few hours each week.

The various junior division competitions of the NFMC are open to composers, pianists, instrumentalists, and vocalists who are 18 or younger. Applicants must also be affiliated with the NFMC through a junior club or national junior membership. The NFMC also organizes competitions in the junior division specifically for disabled musicians.

Are you a current postsecondary student studying the criminal justice field? Alternatively, are you a high school senior or graduate who will be soon enrolled in a postsecondary institution to study criminal justice? If either applies, you might consider applying for the Melissa Linville Criminal Justice Scholarship! Dedicated to fostering the education of students who are excellent representatives of the criminal justice field, the scholarship awards $500 to one hardworking student each year. In order to apply, you must submit the online application and a 1-2 page essay describing long-term goals in the criminal justice field and how the scholarship will help you achieve them. If you’re passionate about criminal justice and are looking for some help to pay off educational expenses, we encourage you to apply!

This scholarship aims to encourage high school students to pursue music so they can achieve their creative goals. Any high school senior who is an aspiring musician may apply for this scholarship. To apply, talk about the role music has played in your life thus far (instruments played, extracurricular activities surrounding music) as well as your future goals as a professional musician. It is optional to add video footage displaying your music.
